United States: A health warning has been issued for people using standing desks, which have become popular, especially for home working. Many believe that standing desks can help reduce health risks from sitting all day. 

However, all these scientists say that standing desks don’t help if you stay inactive and also here in fact, they may increase the risk of problems like swollen veins and blood clots in the legs. So, it’s important to move around regularly, whether you’re sitting or standing! 

As reported by Independent, new research involving over 80,000 UK adults conducted reveals that standing decreases but does not lessen the chances of the diseases including stroke, and heart failure. 

As reported by It also discovered that standing for over two hours a day increased the risk of developing multiple conditions such as deep vein thrombosis – blood clots that form deep inside veins and varicose veins.

According to the authors of the paper, published in the International Journal of Epidemiology, those who sit or stand a lot should plan their movement breaks according to their work schedule. 

Dr Matthew Ahmadi, of the University of Sydney’s Faculty of Medicine and Health in Australia, said: The most important lesson to take home is that while standing will not compensate for a generally sitting down position and may be hazardous to certain individuals in the context of circulation. 

“They pointed out that to stand more results in no addition of cardiovascular health or benefit in the long run which in fact raises risk of circulation related problems. 

A recent study by Dr Ahmadi and colleagues established that daily six minutes of vigorous exercise could reduce heart disease risk, even for people who spent over 11hrs a day sitting.

To find if standing was associated with any health benefits, the researchers used details from 83,013 adults from the UK Biobank, which has details of over half a million Britons, including their health and lifestyle. 

They were not affected by heart problems when the study began and had monitors around their wrist that measured activity levels. 

The characteristics identified revealed that for any period beyond two hours of standing, the probability of contracting circulatory disease rose by 11% for each additional half an hour spent standing.
